The Way We Work With Clients

Who We Work With

Elder Care Service Providers

Sometimes you have a client who wants to remain at home but the home is just too full of things for safe living. The need to use a walker or wheel chair may create a problem of clearing the space to maneuver. Perhaps vital information needs to be found and kept together. Legacy Years Transition Services can do short-term organizing projects such as clearing out clutter and making a floor plan for the new arrangement.

In other cases, the client will not be returning to the home but, instead, will be moving permanently to an assisted living or a skilled nursing care unit. Legacy Years Transition Services can work with the family to plan the move and work out the dispensation of the items in the family home.

Assisted Living Facilities and Retirement Communities

You sometimes have potential clients who need or want to move into your facilities but can’t seem to begin the process. Sometimes one spouse can’t face the prospect of change. Legacy Years Transition Services can help senior citizens think through the choices they need to make, help them develop a time table for the process, and find the resources they need for the downsizing project.

Sometimes there is a need to empty one of your units as quickly as possible after a vacancy but there are no family members to do the work. Legacy Years transition Services can work with you to empty the unit and get it ready for occupation.

Senior Citizens and Their Families

The accumulation of “stuff” within a home can become overwhelming whether or not there is a need to move out of it. The energy to deal with it just isn’t there. Sometimes the parent is unable/unwilling to relinquish anything. Often, important papers can’t be located. There is also the need to determine what to do with their possessions. The adult children are often stressed-out themselves and don’t have a lot of time or interest in dealing with this dilemma. Legacy Years Transition Services can help develop a plan and pull it together with the family. Our approach with the elder is to try to reframe the process from a sense of loss into one of distributing a legacy.

The Way We Work With Clients

The Telephone Assessment

Most of our business comes from referrals, generally by a telephone call. We do as much of an assessment as possible during the phone call to determine the nature of the situation:

  • Does this involve downsizing? Aging-in-place? A home being closed out?
  • If downsizing, where is the existing home?
  • Where is the proposed relocation?
  • What is the state of readiness?
  • What is the time frame?
  • Are there support people?
  • Who will be paying?
  • How much do other family members want to be involved?

If this is a situation where our services could help,we then set up a home visit.

The Home Visit

During an initial home visit we take a tour of the home and listen to the client in order to gain their perspective on what needs to be done…their desired outcome. If it is appropriate, we will get in touch with family members or other stakeholders inorder to obtain their input on the matter. We then develop a proposal for services and pricing options. There are some cases where we can do little or nothing such as a hoarding situation where there are health and safety concerns. Even then, we try to help stakeholders locate resources for dealing with the situation.

The Menu of Services

  • Photographic documentation of the rooms and some contents before we start sorting. We do this to provide proof of what was actually in the home so that the dispersal of the possessions can be verified in the case of a client with dementia, or the suspicion of theft on the part of anyone else.
  • We usually arrange for some level of appraisal of the home’s contents to determine the best way of dispensing the contents.
  • We can provideĀ  boxes and other packing supplies and make arrangements for shipping items to family members.
  • We can create a floor plan for the furniture in the new home so that a realistic determination can be made of what will fit and still leave space to move around safely.
  • We can assist the client in choosing a mover and help with coordinating and monitoring the packing and moving process.
  • We can unpack and get the senior settled in their new surroundings; dishes in the cupboards, clothes in the closets and electronics hooked up. We handle the removal of the packing materials after a client has been unpacked.
  • We can coordinate the move with the retirement living center.
  • We can contact organizations to receive donated items.
  • We can help make arrangements for the placement of pets that can not be moved.
  • We can keep track of vital records and paperwork that need to remain with the client and shred documents that are no longer needed.

Always, our first concern is the client who is going through the transition, keeping their physical and emotional health and their safety firmly in mind. Any move is stressful, but leaving behind many possessions can be particularly hard.

How We Charge

We charge different hourly rates for our different services. We charge $50.00 per hour for our move management time, which is mostly spent coordinating the people and events that need to happen in a timely manner. When we are doing the sorting, packing and/or unpacking for the actual move we charge $35.00 per hour for each of our crew. When working at a distance we also charge for travel. Direct costs such as boxes, packing supplies and disposal fees will be billed to the client. A client should expect to pay from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, depending on the extent of the services desired. Payment is expected as the job progresses. We will put together a proposal to present to the prospective client based on what the clients selects from our menu of services. We make every attempt to work with our client’s individual situation.
